Pleven is one of the major cities in Northern Bulgaria and an interesting destination for visitors looking to combine history, culture, and nature. The city is located approximately 160 km from Sofia, making it relatively easy to reach by car.
The area around Pleven has been inhabited since ancient times, and settlements of strategic importance developed here throughout different historical periods. Near the modern city are the remains of the ancient fortress of Storgosia, while during the Middle Ages, Pleven continued to play an important role in the region. The city is particularly closely associated with the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. The battles for Pleven left a lasting mark on Bulgarian history, and today many of the city's most recognisable landmarks tell the story of this period.
